DESCRIPTION

A Diesel Engine Mechanic is a person who installs, repairs and maintains all internal combustion diesel engines and components as used in transport, construction, and marine industries. This includes troubleshooting structural, mechanical, or hydraulic systems to identify problems. They must also be able to repair and overhaul equipment systems, according to manufacturers' specifications and established procedures. Other responsibilities include testing repaired equipment for proper performance, cleaning and lubricating equipment, and other routine maintenance work. Diesel Engine Mechanics can work under a variety of conditions. Some will work mainly indoors, in repair shops, plants and other buildings, but many will work outside at least part of the time. Workers in some industrial specialties may have to move around for jobs or work in remote areas. Shift work is common, especially in plants. Many of these positions are unionized. Physical strength and dexterity are required for the work of putting together and repairing large machines. Diesel Engine Mechanics often work with electronic systems or diagnostic tools. Because machines are constantly being upgraded to take advantage of new technology, workers must be able to stay up-to-date with new developments. The ability to read and interpret technical information in shop manuals and manufacturer's documentation is important.
